Electoral threshold establishment for the next European elections should be a decision taken at Member state level!

The European Democratic Party, co-chaired by François Bayrou and Francesco Rutelli, held its Council in Warsaw on the 24th of May 2018, in the presence of delegations coming from EDP member parties as well as guests from Hungary, Czechia and Cyprus. The Council meeting was characterised by a very dense debate in preparation for the upcoming European elections that will be held in May 2019.

For the EDP Secretary General Marielle de Sarnez: “A movement, an alternative for the European citizens has to be created. The EDP should be the central player in the new European political scene. We have an obligation to be present and, to gather our political parties and, beyond our political movements, all European movements, associations and citizens who do not want to end the European idea.”  She considered that it will be important to “create a social “Snake in the tunnel” and to converge social rights” and that it is essential to “re-establish hope with a new social horizon”.

The EDP co-President Francesco Rutelli pointed out that: “the EDP was created before the current rise of populism and that the EDP should have a central pro-European, and pro-democracy position.”

It was also stressed that the establishment of electoral threshold for the next European elections should be a decision taken at Member state level and not at European level.
