Poland: the European Parliament must fight – and will continue to – for the respect of the rule of law
The European Parliament expresses its broad support (422 votes in favour, 147 votes against and 48 abstentions) to the decision to activate Article 7(1) TEU. during the mini-plenary on the 1st of March. With this vote, the European Parliament declares that the situation in Poland represents a clear risk of a serious breach of the values of the European Union, values which Poland has pledged to preserve and promote when it became EU member.
The respect for fundamental rights within the European Union is an important issue, as the French MEP Nathalie Griesbeck, ALDE Coordinator of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, indicates: “Through the adoption of this resolution, we strongly support the activation of Article 7 by the European Commission in December 2017. Our assembly must fight - and will continue to fight –to demand full respect for the rule of law. Now it is up to the Member States to act in the Council."
