U.S. steel and aluminium tariffs: an “irresponsible, perhaps illegal, decision"!

Today, the U.S. steel and aluminium tariffs on the import from the EU (as well as from Mexico and Canada) entered into force. The EU reacted by immediately establishing a list of U.S. products that will be taxed more heavily: blue jeans, peanut butter and motorcycles. The Council will further extend the list of U.S. products next week.

German MEP Ulrike Müller is certain that these measures weaken transatlantic relations. She added that “instead of imposing punitive tariffs on its closest allies, the U.S. should work hand in hand with the EU to fight against China’s unfair trade practices.” She called for joint EU action in order to set up immediate countermeasures.

French MEP Nathalie Griesbeck equally deplored the Trump administration’s protectionism by calling this decision “irresponsible, perhaps illegal, on the trade as well as at diplomatic level.” She remains deeply concerned about the repercussions for the East of France and especially for the Lorraine Region.
