Die Anklageschrift gegen İmamoğlu umfasst fast 4.000 Seiten und enthält mehr als 140 Anklagepunkte. Die Staatsanwaltschaft fordert Freiheitsstrafen, die theoretisch mehr als 2.000 Jahre betragen könnten. Der Umfang und die Art dieser Anklagepunkte sowie die vorgelegten Beweise – die offenbar ausschließlich auf Indizien beruhen – lassen stark vermuten, dass es sich um einen politisch motivierten Prozess handelt, der darauf abzielt, einen wichtigen Gegner von Präsident Erdoğan auszuschalten. „Der Prozess gegen Ekrem İmamoğlu weist alle Merkmale eines politischen Prozesses auf, der auf fragwürdigen Anklagepunkten basiert. Der Einsatz der Justiz zur Ausschaltung demokratischer Gegner ist unvereinbar mit der Rechtsstaatlichkeit und den demokratischen Standards, die von einem Mitgliedstaat des Europarates und einem Kandidatenland für die EU-Mitgliedschaft erwartet werden“, sagte Sandro Gozi, Generalsekretär der Europäischen Demokratischen Partei und Mitglied des Europäischen Parlaments (Renew Europe). „Es scheint klar zu sein, dass Ekrem İmamoğlus einziges wirkliches Verbrechen darin besteht, in den Umfragen zur Präsidentschaftswahl durchweg vor Erdoğan zu liegen.“ Gozi verurteilte auch das Verhalten der türkischen Behörden gegenüber Mitgliedern des Europäischen Parlaments. Trotz wiederholter Anfragen wurde Gozi in den letzten Wochen nicht gestattet, İmamoğlu im Gefängnis zu besuchen. „Haben die türkischen Behörden wirklich Angst vor einem Besuch bei einem Mann in einem Hochsicherheitsgefängnis? Diese Weigerung ist ein Zeichen extremer Schwäche. Wenn die türkischen Behörden befürchten, dass ein inhaftierter Politiker, der unter strenger Überwachung steht, sich mit Mitgliedern des Europäischen Parlaments treffen könnte, die lediglich ihre Solidarität bekunden wollen, wirft dies sehr ernste Fragen auf“, fügte Gozi hinzu. „Ein solches Treffen zu verhindern, ist nicht nur inakzeptabel, sondern auch eine klare Herausforderung für das Europäische Parlament selbst.“ Aus diesem Grund kündigte Gozi an, dass er eine parlamentarische Anfrage an die Europäische Kommission bezüglich des Verhaltens der türkischen Behörden richten werde. „Die Türkei ignoriert die grundlegenden demokratischen Prinzipien.
