Oktober, um 14 Uhr auf der Place Jean Rey in Brüssel stattfindet, um die Freilassung des Bürgermeisters von Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, zu fordern. An der Initiative, die von Vertretern der Diaspora und demokratischen Kräften der Türkei ins Leben gerufen wurde, wird auch der Vorsitzende der CHP, Özgür Özel, teilnehmen.Für die EDP, eine zentristische und liberale Kraft der Familie Renew Europe, ist dies ein wichtiger Schritt, um im Herzen der Europäischen Union die Vorrangstellung der Rechtsstaatlichkeit, die Unabhängigkeit der Justiz und den Schutz der Bürgerrechte zu bekräftigen. Die Teilnahme von Özgür Özel verleiht einer Mobilisierung, die die EU-Bürger und die Beziehungen zwischen Brüssel und Ankara betrifft, eine europäische Dimension.Die Inhaftierung demokratisch gewählter Verwaltungsbeamter und die Unterdrückung des Pluralismus widersprechen den Grundwerten der Union und entfernen die Türkei von einem europäischen Weg, der auf Rechten, Inklusion und nachhaltigem Wachstum basiert. Die EDP unterstützt einen offenen, aber anspruchsvollen Dialog, lehnt jede politische Instrumentalisierung der Justiz ab und fordert klare Bedingungen für freie und faire Wahlen.Sandro Gozi, Generalsekretär der EDP und Europaabgeordneter von Renew Europe, wird den Teilnehmern eine Botschaft der Unterstützung übermitteln, aus der wir einige Passagen vorab veröffentlichen können. Darin bringt er die Initiative mit den europäischen Zielen der Demokratie und Rechtsstaatlichkeit in Verbindung:„Auch wenn ich nicht persönlich anwesend sein kann, möchte ich als Generalsekretär der Europäischen Demokratischen Partei und Europaabgeordneter von Renew Europe meine volle Unterstützung für Ihren Protest zum Ausdruck bringen, der die sofortige Freilassung von Bürgermeister Ekrem İmamoğlu fordert.“„Wir Europäischen Demokraten“, so Gozi abschließend, „stehen voll und ganz an Ihrer Seite, um Erdogan aufzufordern, Bürgermeister İmamoğlu unverzüglich freizulassen und freie und faire Wahlen zuzulassen. Setzen Sie Ihren Kampf fort, in dem Wissen, dass wir Ihnen bis zum Ende zur Seite stehen.“Mit der Demonstration in Brüssel erneuert die EDP ihre Zusammenarbeit mit Verbündeten und der Zivilgesellschaft, um Rechtsstaatlichkeit, politischen Pluralismus und Meinungsfreiheit zu verteidigen – auch über die Zugehörigkeit zu dieser oder jener europäischen politischen Familie hinaus. Die Partei wird die Entwicklung des Falls İmamoğlu in den zuständigen europäischen Gremien weiterhin aufmerksam verfolgen und Initiativen fördern, die Rechte, Rechtmäßigkeit und Transparenz stärken – im Einklang mit dem europäischen Engagement für eine Türkei, die den demokratischen Standards der EU näher kommt.
