With great sadness, we learned this morning of the death of David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament, at the age of 65. We send our condolences to his family, to his loved ones and to his European political party.

European Democrats expressed their shock this morning and are saddened by the loss of a great European, committed to humanist values, who worked tirelessly during the Covid crisis19 to protect Europeans.

"We mourn this person, it is a great loss for the European Parliament. For the first time we are losing a sitting President. It is important that the European Parliament pays tribute to him quickly by naming a building in his honour." Sandro Gozi, Secretary General of the European Democratic Party.

"I will miss the long discussions in your office between political news, Florence, the mountains, the scouts. I will miss your sweet, wry smile and your unique voice." Nicola Danti, Vice-President of the Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament

"You always found the right words for everyone, you were a reference for me." Nicola Caputo, member of the European Committee of the Regions
