The democratic opposition in Belarus wins the Sakharov Prize 2020
Today, the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament decided to award the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought 2020 to the democratic opposition in Belarus, represented - amongst others - by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, president-elect of Belarus, Siarhei Tsikhanousky, video blogger and political prisoner, Ales Bialiatski, founder of the Belarusian human rights organisation “Viasna”, Stepan Svetlov, founder of the Telegram channel NEXTA, Mikola Statkevich, political prisoner and presidential candidate in the 2010 elections, and Svetlana Alexievich, member of the National Coordination Council of Belarus and Nobel Laureate.
European Democrats congratulate the democratic opposition in Belarus.
German MEP Engin Eroglu points out that: "Their win shows how important it is to fight for human rights, no matter how powerful the opponent seems to be. In our thoughts, of course, we are especially grateful to those who have been arrested or even killed as a result of the protests, in your tireless fight for the human rights of the entire Belarussian population."
Executive Vice-President and MEP Ulrike Müller stresses that: "They have been demonstrating for weeks against ruler Lukashenko - despite the violent actions of the authorities. [... ] I can only join our EU President in saying: Keep up the fight for democracy in your country.' and French MP Frédéric Petit: " This Sakharov prize awards the incredible courage and self-sacrifice shown by the Belarusians over the past 75 days!"
Renew Europe Vice-President and French MEP Sylvie Brunet explains that: "The European Union stands by the Belarusian people in their struggle for the respect of their fundamental rights and freedoms" and French MEP Christophe Grudler concludes that: "The Belarusian people are courageous and determined. The Flag of European Union is at their side in their tireless fight for fundamental freedoms."
