"The Franco-German initiative is a message of hope and solidarity to the people of Europe."
The Franco-German initiative presented by Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Emmanuel Macron is a message of hope and solidarity addressed to Europeans.
After an initial emergency response by the Commission and the European Central Bank, this Franco-German initiative lays the foundations for a genuine strategy for the reconstruction and rebuilding of the European Union.
The proposal for a EUR 500 billion Recovery Fund for the most affected sectors and regions, backed by the Commission's borrowing capacity on behalf of the Union, is the long-awaited affirmation that solidarity is indeed the basis of what brings us together and of who we are.
Beyond this recovery plan, which is truly a historic first within the European Union, all of the proposals presented aim at the expected reorientation of Europe.
Ensuring a new European sovereignty in the strategic sectors of health and the prevention of future pandemics; finally, building a genuine industrial and commercial strategy, facing up to international competition and better defending our national and European champions; bringing the demand for ecological transition to the heart of our common economies and growth.
It's a new period starting now.
With the awareness of the absolute necessity of a Europe that weighs heavily in the world at a time when the exacerbated tensions between the great powers can tip us into a fragmented and chaotic world.
Today, there is no lack of France and Germany to give substance to European solidarity. This is good news for Europe. Good news for our fellow citizens. Good news for democracy.
