Among them is **Igor Žmirić**, commander of the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (SAJ), together with serving and former members of the police unit that protects officials and government buildings (JZO). They are suspected of abusing and torturing student **Nikolina Sinđelić** and her fellow students in the garage of the Serbian Government building on Nemanjina Street, in Belgrade, on the night of 14 to 15 August 2025. **Sandro Gozi**, Secretary-General of the European Democratic Party and Member of the European Parliament, welcomed the arrests. “Finally, things are beginning to move in the right direction in Serbia. These arrests are a welcome and long-overdue step towards justice. But they must be only the beginning. “We spoke out forcefully when Nikolina reported the violence and threats she had suffered. We stood beside her and welcomed her to our Congress in **Bilbao** last November, ensuring her voice was heard across Europe. Our solidarity with her and every student who resisted intimidation remains unwavering. “Accountability must now become a mantra in Serbia: for those who committed abuses, those who ordered them and anyone who helped conceal them. Investigations must establish the full chain of responsibility, wherever the evidence leads. “Full light must also be shed on the alleged use of a sonic weapon against peaceful demonstrators on 15 March 2025. Victims deserve an independent investigation and credible answers. “**Vučić** bears political responsibility for a system that treated students as enemies and independent journalists as targets. His machinery of intimidation must be dismantled. No political office or connection can place anyone above the law. Every assault, allegation of torture and threat against journalists must be investigated, and those responsible brought to justice. “As Serbia moves towards a new government, we place our trust in its democratic renewal and urge the European Union to do the same. The incoming government deserves political confidence, practical support and a credible European perspective as it restores independent institutions and the rule of law. “The stains left by years of repression can only be removed through truth and justice. Serbia’s citizens have shown extraordinary courage.
