Brazil

Brazil is the largest country in Latin America and the region's biggest democracy, a federal presidential republic of more than 210 million people (2024), made up of 26 states and the Federal District, with Brasília as its capital. It has been a strategic partner of the European Union since 2007 and is a founding member of Mercosur.

A key player in the G20 and the BRICS, Brazil is central to global climate and Amazon policy, as its hosting of COP30 in Belém in 2025 showed. Its relationship with Europe rests on trade, multilateralism and shared democratic institutions, and on the EU–Mercosur agreement, whose negotiations were concluded in December 2024.

Brazil reflects a conviction the European Democrats hold firm: that partnerships between democracies are built on respect for each nation's sovereignty — and that the right of Brazilians to choose their own future, free from foreign interference, is non-negotiable.
