On 29 and 30 March 2025, the European Democratic Party (EDP) enthusiastically participated in the EAJ-PNV congress, held at the historic ‘frontón Atano III’ building in San Sebastián, in the Basque Country, setting up an information stand to strengthen the ties between the two political formations. This event marked a significant moment for the PNV, with the unanimous election of Aitor Esteban as the party’s new president, succeeding Andoni Ortuzar after three terms at the helm.
The EDP’s presence at the congress underlines the importance of collaboration between European centrist parties in promoting common values such as Europeanism, economic liberalism, social inclusion and the protection of civil rights. The PDE stand offered the many participants the opportunity to learn more about current European initiatives and discuss shared strategies to address current political challenges.
Special thanks went to Andoni Ortuzar who, in addition to having led the PNV for over a decade with balance and vision, has also held the role of vice-president of the EDP, contributing decisively to the strengthening of the party’s pro-European profile and the credibility of our political family in Brussels. His commitment, institutional seriousness and the consistency with which he has defended an idea of Europe that is open, inclusive and attentive to local autonomy remain a valuable point of reference for the future.
During the congress, Aitor Esteban emphasised the need for unity, exemplarity and humility to continue the party’s and the country’s growth path. These principles resonate with the EDP’s approach, which aims to build a stronger Europe through cooperation between moderate and progressive political forces.
EDP’s participation in the EAJ-PNV congress is a step forward in building a European network of parties that share a centrist and democratic vision, working together to promote balanced policies that combine economic development and social justice.
