Our Secretary General Sandro Gozi participated in the main panel discussion titled “Progress or Disruption: Fostering a Value-Based Transatlantic Security Architecture” at the Progressive Governance Summit, organised by Das Progressive Zentrum. The event brought together leading progressive voices from across Europe and the United States to debate the future of global security, democratic values, and the need for renewed transatlantic cooperation in an era of geopolitical uncertainty.
During his intervention, Sandro Gozi underscored the urgency of developing a stronger and more cohesive European approach to defence—rooted in democratic values and solidarity among EU member states. He drew a compelling parallel between the EU’s coordinated financial response to the COVID-19 crisis and the current need to finance a common European defence strategy.
“The method we used to issue the Eurobond, to go to the market, to find the necessary liquidity to finance our path against the negative consequences of COVID—can we use this method to develop and find resources for a new common European approach to both defence and the defence industry? I think yes: we can and we must!”
Gozi’s remarks sparked a dynamic exchange among fellow panelists, emphasizing the critical need for shared strategic autonomy, sustainable defence investment, and a transatlantic partnership that is both values-based and future-oriented.
His participation reaffirmed our commitment to a stronger, more united Europe—one that can uphold peace, democracy, and multilateral cooperation in a rapidly changing world.
