Canada

Canada is one of the world's most established democracies, a federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy of more than 40 million people (2024), made up of ten provinces and three territories, with Ottawa as its capital. A G7 member and a founding member of NATO, it shares with the European Union its values, its institutions, a commitment to multilateralism and the rule of law — and two of Europe's languages.

The EU and Canada are already linked by a Strategic Partnership Agreement, by the CETA trade agreement and, since 2025, by a Security and Defence Partnership. In a world reshaped by great-power rivalry and economic coercion, the EDP supports enhanced cooperation in every field, from trade and energy to defence, research and foreign policy, and Canada's progressive integration into European structures.

Canada reflects a conviction the European Democrats hold firm: that Europe is defined by its values more than by its borders — and that the time has come to open a real path for Canada to join the European project, in a form to be defined together.
