Freie Wähler
Story
Freie Wähler (Free Voters) is a German centrist party with deep roots in local and regional politics. It grew out of the long-standing tradition of independent 'free voter' associations active in towns and municipalities across Germany — citizens engaged in local life beyond the established national parties — and developed into an organised political force with a strong presence in regional government, particularly in Bavaria.
At the heart of Freie Wähler's project lies a commitment to decentralisation, subsidiarity and pragmatic, citizen-centred governance. It champions the interests of small and medium-sized enterprises, rural communities and local authorities, defends responsible public finances, and approaches politics from the ground up — close to the everyday concerns of citizens rather than to ideological abstraction.
Within the European Democratic Party, which it joined in 2015, Freie Wähler embodies a conviction at the core of the EDP's vision: that Europe is built from its communities upwards, and that a Union which respects subsidiarity and listens to its towns and regions is a Union its citizens can trust.
