Carlo Calenda’s Azione party joins the European Democratic Party.

Gianluca Susta served was a member of the Italian Senate from 2013 to 2018. He also was a member of the European Parliament from 2006 until 2014, when he took up a seat vacated after the 2006 Italian general election and his election to the Italian Senate. While there, he served on multiple committees and delegations, including the Committee on International Trade, Delegation to the EU-Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee, Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly, and the Delegation to the EU-Croatia Joint Parliamentary Committee, among others. An EDP vice-president since 2014, he previously served at regional and local level as vice-president of the Piedmont Region from 2005 to 2010 and as mayor from 1992 to 2004 in Biella, his hometown. Born in 1956, he is a lawyer by profession. He graduated from the University of Turin.
