Gozi: "Iceland's vote is a warning Europe must heed"
Statement by EDP Secretary General Sandro Gozi – Iceland's vote on EU accession talks:
"Iceland’s vote against reopening EU accession talks is a warning Europe should take seriously.
The EU’s power of attraction remains strong and undiminished, but it can never be taken for granted.
Europe must keep earning trust by becoming more democratic, more effective and closer to its citizens: faster decisions, simpler institutions, less bureaucracy and stronger democratic accountability.
A Union capable of reforming itself is also stronger, more credible and more attractive.
This is what we expect to hear from Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in her next State of the Union address on 16 September 2026".
