Sandro Gozi in the United States to strengthen transatlantic ties ahead of the midterms
From 29 to 31 October, Sandro Gozi, Secretary-General of the European Democratic Party (EDP) and a Member of the European Parliament, travelled to the United States to strengthen political ties ahead of the midterm elections and discuss Europe’s role in a rapidly changing international landscape. In New York, his programme brought together exchanges on technology, diplomacy, transatlantic relations and the Middle East.
AI governance and the next generation
On Friday, 30 October, Gozi took part in a discussion on artificial intelligence governance with New York State Senator Kristen Gonzalez and a group of students.
Their questions deepened the exchange on how Europe and the United States are approaching AI regulation, and how public institutions can respond to a technological shift already affecting society, the economy and everyday life. The discussion also highlighted the importance of listening to younger generations as policymakers consider how to govern technologies that will shape their future.
Europe’s role in a changing international landscape
Gozi met Jérôme Bonnafont and Jay Dharmadhikari, representatives of France to the United Nations, to discuss major diplomatic challenges and the role Europe should play amid rising international tensions.
In a separate meeting with Giorgio Marrapodi, Italy’s Ambassador to the United Nations, discussions focused on the future of transatlantic relations between Europe and the United States, as well as Italy’s upcoming elections and their political implications.
Israel and the prospects for peace
The mission also included a meeting with the board of J Street. Discussions focused on the results of the Israeli elections, Israel’s future and its relationship with the European Union. In a region where peace, security and stability remain fundamental challenges, sustained political dialogue is essential.
On Friday evening, Gozi also met with a group of Europeans close to Renew Europe in New York.
Europe must be an actor
From AI governance to diplomacy, from transatlantic cooperation to the Middle East, the meetings in New York reinforced the need for Europe to be fully engaged in global affairs. Europe must help shape the transformations underway, defend its interests and values, and assume its responsibilities on the international stage.
