US midterms: a lesson for Europe, says Gozi

The European Democratic Party welcomed the outcome of the US midterm elections of 3 November 2026, in which the Democrats won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

“The Democrats’ extraordinary victory is a powerful testament to the resilience of American democracy: its ability to hold those in power accountable, renew itself and change course. It offers renewed hope that the next two years will mark the beginning of the end of the Trump era,” said Sandro Gozi, Secretary General of the EDP and Member of the European Parliament.

A lesson for Europe

Gozi said: “What we increasingly hope will prove to be a passing chapter in American foreign policy must nevertheless leave Europeans with an enduring lesson: Europe must become stronger, more united and more sovereign, capable of standing firm through any political storm and defending its interests and values, regardless of who occupies the White House.”

Turning the page on MAGA

“Those in Europe who chose to embrace Trump and his political agenda made a profound strategic mistake. The time has come to turn the page on MAGA ideology and build Europe’s future on the enduring foundations of democracy, freedom and the rule of law,” he said.

Beyond the converted

Gozi concluded: “Finally, the decisive role played by independent voters carries an essential lesson for democrats across Europe: elections are not won by speaking only to the converted. They are won by reaching beyond traditional political boundaries, earning the trust of citizens and offering credible, compelling answers to their hopes and concerns.”
