Gozi: Germany’s Stability Is Europe’s Stability

One year after the change of government in Germany, Sandro Gozi, Secretary General of the European Democratic Party and Member of the European Parliament for Renew Europe, has underlined that the country’s political and economic direction is no longer only a national matter, but a central European concern. In a context marked by geopolitical uncertainty, global competition and growing social polarization, Gozi recalled that “Germany’s stability and ability to act are crucial for the entire European Union.”

His statement comes as Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s administration faces increasing pressure over the delivery of its main promises, from economic renewal to faster modernization, greater state efficiency and renewed stability. Gozi framed the challenge from the perspective of the European Democratic Party, stressing that “this is not about partisan slogans, but about responsibility and long-term leadership.” For the EDP, the point is clear: Europe needs governments able to create trust, accelerate reform and strengthen democratic resilience.

Gozi’s full statement reads: “One year after the change of government in Germany, the administration of Chancellor Friedrich Merz is increasingly under pressure. Many of the major promises — economic renewal, faster modernization, greater state efficiency, and renewed stability — are now facing far more critical public assessments. For this very reason, political developments in Germany are far more than a national debate. Germany’s stability and ability to act are crucial for the entire European Union. At a time of geopolitical uncertainty, economic competition with the United States and China, growing security risks, and increasing social polarization, Europe needs a strong, reliable, and reform-oriented Germany. From the perspective of the European Democratic Party, this is not about partisan slogans, but about responsibility and long-term leadership. Europe needs: economic strength instead of stagnation, less bureaucracy and faster decision-making, investment in innovation, technology, and competitiveness, a common European security and energy policy, and governments capable of creating trust and stability. Germany remains the economic and political center of Europe. When Germany weakens, all of Europe feels it. When Germany demonstrates stability and the capacity for reform, it strengthens the entire European Union. Europe does not need permanent crises and ideological trench warfare now — but rather the courage to modernize, strategic thinking, and political reliability.”

For the European Democratic Party, Gozi’s message reflects a broader centrist and liberal agenda: competitiveness without social fragmentation, innovation without unnecessary bureaucracy, security without nationalism, and reform anchored in the rule of law and civil rights. Germany’s ability to modernize its economy, invest in technology and contribute to a common European security and energy policy is essential for the whole Renew Europe family and for citizens who expect effective, stable and responsible leadership.

The EDP will continue to support a Europe capable of acting with clarity and ambition. Germany remains a decisive part of that effort. As Gozi stressed, “When Germany demonstrates stability and the capacity for reform, it strengthens the entire European Union.” That is the path the European Democratic Party intends to promote: modernization, strategic thinking and political reliability at the service of Europe’s citizens.
