The Final Countdown: European Democrats meet in Athens

The European Democratic Party will hold its 2026 Congress in the city where democracy first took political form. On Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October, Athens will host delegates from the party's 24 member parties across 17 countries, its 11 MEPs, and political leaders and guests from across Europe and beyond.

Under the title "The Final Countdown", the Congress will be both a political meeting and a call to action. At a time when freedom, democracy and the rule of law are under pressure, European Democrats will meet to strengthen their political family and advance a clear ambition: building a Global Alliance of Democrats — a concrete cooperation between democratic forces in Europe and beyond, united against authoritarianism, disinformation and foreign interference.

Two days, two sessions

The statutory session of the Congress will take place on the afternoon of Friday 23 October. The public session will open on Saturday 24 October. Both will be hosted at The Ilisian Hotel, Leoforos Vasilissis Sofias 46, Athens.

Why Athens

Choosing Athens is not only symbolic. More than two thousand years ago, the city gave political form to a revolutionary idea: that citizens should have a voice in shaping their common future. Today, returning to the birthplace of democracy is a reminder of both Europe's roots and its responsibilities.

Why "The Final Countdown"

The title is inspired by one of Europe's most recognisable songs, performed by the Swedish band Europe. The reference is deliberately playful, but its political meaning is serious: Europe can no longer afford hesitation or complacency. This is a countdown to a moment of choice — a call for Europe to act with courage, unity and democratic ambition.

Sandro Gozi, Secretary-General of the European Democratic Party, said:

"Europe is living through a decisive moment. Democracy is not only a legacy we inherit; it is a responsibility we must renew every day. In Athens, we want to give substance to a Global Alliance of Democrats: bringing together those who believe in freedom, the rule of law and accountable government, in Europe and across the world. Against authoritarianism, disinformation and foreign interference, democrats must stop acting alone."

Stefanos Kasselakis, President of Democrats – Progressive Centre, said:

"Athens gave birth to democracy, and today, it must be the place where we breathe new life into it. As we face unprecedented challenges from disinformation and extremism across the globe, the time for hesitation is over. The Democrats – Progressive Centre is proud to host our European political family as we launch this Global Alliance. Together, we are starting the countdown toward a stronger, more united, and deeply democratic Europe that leaves no citizen behind."

The detailed programme and further practical information will be published shortly on the EDP website.
