Spazio Pubblico joins the EDP
Spazio Pubblico, the movement launched by European Parliament Vice-President Pina Picierno, has officially joined the European Democratic Party (EDP). Its membership was approved unanimously on Friday 2 October 2026. It strengthens the family of European Democrats and their commitment to bringing together pro-European, democratic and reformist forces in Italy and across Europe.
Gozi: “Pro-Europeans must organise”
“We welcome Spazio Pubblico to our political family. With Pina, we share one belief: pro-Europeans must organise, join forces and offer citizens a proposal that can truly change things,” said Sandro Gozi, Secretary General of the EDP. “We want a Europe that can defend its own security, support growth and protect freedoms. To build it, we need political forces with the courage to fight for real European sovereignty, against nationalism and against any ambiguity towards autocrats. We want a Europe that leads an alliance of democracies, standing alongside those who defend freedom and the rule of law around the world. Spazio Pubblico's arrival strengthens this common battle, in Italy and in Europe.”
Picierno: “An even more European dimension”
“Spazio Pubblico's membership of the European Democratic Party, approved unanimously on Friday, is an important step on the path we have set out on. We are officially joining a European political community whose values of democracy, freedom, federalism and reformism are at the heart of our project, and we fully share them,” said Pina Picierno. “I thank the EDP for its trust and for welcoming Spazio Pubblico with a unanimous vote. From today our work grows stronger and takes on an even more European dimension. We want to bring ideas and a sense of responsibility to building a stronger party, one that is increasingly able to shape a new kind of European politics.”
A growing family
With Spazio Pubblico, the European Democratic Party now has 26 members, 11 Members of the European Parliament and 123 national parliamentarians. In Italy, the EDP was already represented by Italia Viva, a full member, and Tempi Nuovi, an observer member.
